The iSchool Initiative

The video The iSchool Initiative by Travis Allen, talks about instead of using books, paper, and notebooks in class this teenager wants to change everything in the school to operate through an I-touch which would be called I-School. There would be Apps for everything including maps, presidents, calculators, and all the subjects. Instead of students using paper for notes they would use the note App and would allow them to email the notes to their teacher and receive the notes as well if they missed class or didn’t get all the material. There would also be a classic App that would include all your textbooks and you would not waste any resources or paper. This App would allow you to turn pages and read the chapters straight from the I-school. I think the assignments App is an exceptional App because it shows you your assignments that you have to complete and your teacher can see them right away. I think this App is great because many students forget their assignments or need help from teachers and it is all given to you in an App.

After watching the video, I think that his idea is actually very interesting. I think that students and children already spend all their time on their iPhones and would be able to master these Apps because they are already so useful to students. One major important factor of this video is the money it will save the students and this is easier on the parents and students in college. Also, it helps the environment and people are always complaining on how our country is polluted and too many trees are being cut down, now is our opportunity to do something about it. I think this is a great idea and everyone is already so familiar with technology so we should incorporate it into schools.

Eric Whitacre's Virtual Tour

I think that the Eric Whitacre's Virtual Tour by Eric Whitacre, video was amazing. Technology is really an incredible thing for someone to be able to do that with all the voices of different people. It was an incredible experience because I have never seen something that unique. The idea that he has never met these people is truly amazing and shows how technology can do amazing things. I think that this shows so much like how far technology has come in the world because no one has truly realized the amazing things it is capable of. Overall, it completely opened my eyes and I absolutely loved it.

Why I flipped my classroom and Dr. Lodge McCammon's FIZZ

After watching Why I flipped my classroom by Katie Gimbar and Dr. Lodge McCammon's FIZZ by Dr. Lodge McCammon videos, I have come to the conclusion that I really am interested in this idea. I could definitely find myself using this strategy in my own classroom for a number of reasons. I think that all students are different and in order to keep their attention and them wanting to learn more you must challenge them. I think that this strategy is great because each student deserves to be on their own pace of learning and understand the material on their own time. I think that allowing the students to teach themselves and hear the lecture as many times as they need is the perfect method to teaching. I would really recommend using this strategy because I always learned better when the teacher was able to give me her attention and help me because I was embarrassed to ask questions during class. I cannot wait to use this strategy in my own classroom.

Teaching in the 21st Century

After watching the video Teaching in the 21st Century by Kevin Roberts, he thinks that teaching in the 21st century means to learn and understand the concepts. He thinks it is going to change through all the students because they are using the internet for everything like commenting, tagging, and searching for information. I think he is exactly right that the use for the web is becoming so popular in schools and students are figuring out the importance of it. I think that Roberts is correct that we must incorporate all the tools that students are already so familiar with and enjoy using into learning with these tools. The methods we choose to use to help these students must be challenging and I as an educator must challenge these students and make them work to the best of their ability. I do not think it will affect me as an educator I will just have to learn to use these methods into what I intend to teach my students and realize that they will learn better this way. I think the main purpose of the educator is to engage the students and that’s what I plan on doing even if it means I must change my methods.

Langwitches 1st graders create their own read along blog

After reading Langwitches- 1st graders create their own read along blog, I learned alot about new ways to teach children in the classroom. This post was about how first graders got together and formed a podcast with their teacher about the book they were reading. Throughout recording the podcast the teacher was still reading to the class. Each student took turns recording their part for the podcast. At the end, the students listened to the final podcast while reading along with their book. The teacher felt this really improved not only the children’s interest for the book but also the reading comprehension and understanding of the book as a whole. She found them underlining important parts and taking notes to what they liked best about the book. Also, it made it easy that if a student got lost, then he or she could catch up at the end of every chapter because she recorded a special sound that went off when the chapter was over. The teacher learned that the students were more involved and wanting to record more. They were completely fascinated by how something could record their voices and then play it back to them. I think that the more kids get involved with podcasting or recording themselves it gives them something to relate to when hearing their own voices being read back to them. I believe this is a very useful tool for young children because they are able to hear themselves read and listen along at the same time.

Langwitches Reading Comprehension

After reading Langwitches Reading Comprehension I learned a lot of new ways to help children understand words. This post talked about the importance of learning words by hearing and listening to the sounds and other words surrounded it. It also states how you must listen to the context of the word and the words leading up to it because the melody of the whole sentence embraces the word and gives it meaning. It is also very important to attach feeling to the word. For example, if I was to tell someone I was very sad about something with a positive tone of voice that would make them very confused. I would need to use a sad tone of voice to make the listener feel sad with me. Another important factor about podcasting that is addressed is the editing of the podcast. This is important because the more you see, read, and manipulate the sounds of the podcast the more meaningful the words become.
The most important part of this post was involving the children with the podcast. As the children began to record the story of Purim they became more involved with the story then they were when they were first reading it. As the story continued, the children started playing with their voices on the podcast and editing them. At the end, they got to come up to the board and drag their part of the story to the exact place it was needed. They had to learn where each part needed to be so they had to listen and play and stop the clip to find its exact location. Although this was a lot of fun for the children, the whole point of the project was to help them write, listen, and comprehend a script while working on their speaking skills and fluency. I feel this was a great tool for the children to be using. This podcast not only helped them get more involved and understand the story it also helped them learn the language better. I think the biggest impact this podcast had on the students was giving them the opportunity to hear themselves being recorded and talking in this language.

Langwitches Podcasting with First Grade

After reading Langwitches Podcasting with First Grade I learned that interact kids in the classroom was the perfect to help them learn the material. This podcast was very different from the first two I read. I thought this teacher’s method was very good and involved the class in a new perspective. She had the class come up with questions and answers about the book they just read. She interviewed both boys and girls and took notes of the questions they had after reading the book. The students were very eager to record their questions out in the hallway while the rest of the class continued working on their school work. The teacher became amazed by the cooperation that was going on in the classroom when it wasn’t even the child’s turn to record. This project got the kids very involved in reading and understanding what they read. I think making the kids think of questions to ask about the book was a great tactic because it opened up their mind and made them think deeper about the book then they already had. Overall, I think that interacting a podcast in your classroom is a great idea because it opens up a whole new way of learning and understand the material. Also, young kids learn more by doing and getting involved and what better way to do that then letting them record themselves.

Peer Editing Tutorial

In the video by Adriana Zardini,Peer Editing Tutorial, and the slide show Peer Editing Slide Show I learned a lot of good information from the peer editing tutorial slide show. I thought it was interesting how you should always start with a positive comment about their blog or paper. It is always good to be positive because if someone was grading my work I would want them to be positive too. The reason is because everyone worked very hard on their work and if you start out with something negative it can really hurt them and could discourage them from enjoying writing in the future. I did not realize how there is a structure or form you can follow in peer editing someone else’s paper just like there is a form is writing your own paper. I feel that writing a paper and peer editing someone else’s paper is very similar because when writing a paper or blog you follow steps just like you do in peer editing. I also have just recently learned that it is always important to read through the whole paper or blog before you start any corrections so you can get the idea or message they are trying to send. After you understand their topic you can start your corrections, which is smart because I usually start trying to make corrections to early and they seem to not make much sense.

Writing Peer Review Top 10 Mistakes

In the video by Tim Bedley, Writing Peer Review Top 10 Mistakes, is actually very interesting because I have found myself doing a lot of these mistakes throughout my years of peer reviewing my friend’s papers. I think that generalizing your comments on people’s paper are very important because sometimes I get comments like this sentence is awkward and I am confused of how it is awkward. I think the person say it is awkward because it does not make sense and to re-word it or give suggestions or how to make it a better sentence. One mistake I could relate with was getting off topic; it is very easy to get caught up chatting with your friends instead of being concerned with critiquing your paper. Another major mistake I just recently encountered was someone speeding through their peer review. The other day I had someone peer review my paper and they handed it back to me in a matter of minutes without one mark on the paper for correctness. I knew that they just rushed through my paper and did not take any time to revise it. These mistakes are commonly used every day and I wish more students could view these videos and realize the mistakes they are making with other students.
This shows a paper that means everyone makes mistakes and it is our job to fix them

Throughout the first two videos on peer editing and the correction methods I learned that even though there are three easy steps to peer editing it is way more detailed. I learned that you should always go beyond the normal expectations because you can never be too careful when grading someone else’s paper.

Technology in Special Education

The video by Lace Cook, Technology in Special Education shows how effective technology can be in certain kids’ lives. This video showed how children who could not talk were now able to type on the computer to show what that wanted to say. These kids were born with disabilities that have prevented them from interacting with the world like other people, but technology has given them the opportunity to interact with the world today.
This shows special needs children using the internet to connect in their own way

Another important way that technology was used in helping the children with special needs learn was when the kid was listening to the book on his I-touch out loud and it was helping him follow along with the words in the book. I think that this is a great technological tool for students to have because some kids are auditory learners instead of visual; in this case they need to hear the words to learn rather than just read them. I also have this problem and have been listening to books on tape for years and think it is one of the most helpful tools.
Another way technology was used that I enjoyed was when the teacher was getting the young girl to spell words by touching the letters and spelling the letters into words. I think that this is a great way to help young children with special needs to incorporate learning through technology which gives them opportunity we get every day in a classroom. With technology and giving these children a chance makes them more eager and ready to learn in the classroom.
There are different ways that I could incorporate technology in my classroom for special needs children. I could use a radio and play books out loud while they follow along by reading the book, this way they get to see the words and hear them at the same time. Another way is when I tell them the letter they can type it on their computer and that way they can have a visual aid on what they are hearing. The main focus I would have in my classroom is allowing the kids to hear and see the letters and words they are making out. I think it is important for all kids to understand the importance of technology and how it can make students more eager to learn.

How Ipads work for Academics with Autism

After watching the video uploaded by Autism Epicenter, How Ipads work for Academics with Autism and looking up the website Great Apps for teaching Children I think a great App I would use in my classroom is the IWriteWords App. This App is used for children who are learning how to write and it outlines the letters for them and they trace over it with their finger. When you have mastered the tracing part of the App, then the children get to learn how to write the letters all by themselves. When the child does not accomplish the task correctly it explains where they went wrong and gives them more practice letters to help them fix the problem. I think this is an exceptional App because most of the time children are not aware of the mistakes they make and writing is such an important concept to learn and this way they can fix the mistake right away. They will be eager to fix their mistakes because you cannot move on to the next level until your writing is correct.

Harness Your Students' Digital Smarts

After watching the video Harness your Students' Digital Smarts by Vicki Davis, I feel that technology is so important in schools because it allows students to learn in a whole new environment. For example, in the video the teacher was allowing different groups to go in front of the class and teach what they learned. I think this strategy is exceptional because some students instead of just learning by listening to the teacher can also learn by teaching the material. In order to teach something you must have to understand it well so in order for some of these students to teach the information they know they must learn and understand it first. This is not necessarily true because everyone is learning every day and no one knows all the information but it is good for the student to learn as he/she teaches the class.
This is showing how humans can connect with the outside world

Technology is advancing more and more everyday so it is very important for the students to learn and understand new software that is being used in today’s society and prepare them for the future. Students are learning to build virtual worlds and having to teach the teacher about new discoveries they are making on the web. These children are from a rural part of Georgia and are so connected with the world around them due to the internet. They are becoming more involved with what is going on in today’s society. I completely agree that involving the children in the learning and teaching aspect is a great idea because they are becoming more involved with the outside world.

Did you know? 3.0 – John Strange 2012 Version by John Strange

You can look at this video at Did You Know?
I watched the video Did you know? 3.0 - A John Strange 2012 Version by John Strange. I though this video was very interesting and provided me with facts I did not already know. I had no clue that our country is so illiterate compared to other countries across the globe. For example, 25% of India’s population has stronger IQs then our entire country combined. India started becoming more knowledgeable than the United States in kindergarten which explains so much because the smaller you are when you learn the more you remember. It was very interesting how the top 25% of kindergarteners will soon be the honor students in high school and I would understand how that is possible because the more you learn when your little the longer the knowledge stays with you as you get older.

I think that the facts made about the internet and technology is incredible. Our world has become more and more dependent on technology and people all over the world devote so much time to their computers instead of getting out and interacting face to face with human beings. I think the number of times Americans visit Google and YouTube is outrageous but does not surprise me at all. Also, the amount of text messages sent throughout the day by students did not surprise me because this is the problem with students they have lost the interest to communicate with others and are just concerned about phones or computers. I have seen this become a problem because I have seen someone instead of dealing with a problem with another student they text their response to the problem and the issue only becomes bigger. I believe that it is ruining our society and the need for students to learn and interact with others. Overall, I thought it was a great video because it provided me with knowledge I had known about but did not realize the severity of the problems we are having in this country and the challenges I will be dealing with as an educator.

Mr. Winkle Wakes

You can check out this video at Mr. Wrinkle Wakes
The Mr. Winkle Wakes video by Mathew Needleman starts out with Mr. Winkle waking up from a coma after 100 years of sleeping and realizes the world has become more advance. He first walks into the hospital and sees that people are being kept alive by machines and masks they are wearing. He also notices all the computers in the offices that people are working from and the telephones surrounding them. It is not until he walks into the schools that everything seems normal again.

After watching the video Mr. Winkle Wakes, it made me realize how much technology has increased over the years and how much it has changed our society. Personally I think that it has changed for the good and the worse for society because it has increased our chances in helping save lives and make people’s lives easier but also has decreased the ability to communicate with the outside world. Overall, I believe that the technology has advanced for the better use of our society rather than the worse because things are becoming easier and we are saving more lives. The one place that technology has not advanced is the school system in which students are still receiving lectures and taking notes without technology. I believe that they should increase the technology in schools because if it is being used so much in the real world then the students need to already be familiar with it.

Sir Ken Robinson – The Importance of Creativity

This video can be viewed at The Importance of Creativity
The video of the importance of creativity by Sir Ken Robinson talks about the creativity in schools. It was very interesting the man talked about how creativity in schools is not stressed as much as literacy, but it is just as important. I completely agree with this statement because it is so important that children express their full potential of their creative mind. This video tells about how no matter if the child knows what their talking about or not they take a shot at it anyways and explain what they do know and are never afraid of being wrong. He tells us that a big problem we are having in schools is kids are being educated out of creativity and it is said that we are born artists but we are not able to express it because we are taught out of creative minds.

He starts to talk about his move to America. He talks about the educational system and how they are all the same and the systems are very similar in how the arts are disregarded. He talks about how we teach math everyday but not dance and music and they can be elective and should be required courses. I agree with this statement because it is important to experience with your creative mind as much as it is to experience with your intellectual part of your mind. Overall, this video is talking about how the education is not diverse and just focuses on one aspect when really there is so many parts of learning. People around the world are not being able to get jobs when their getting out of college because they do not have a master or PhD and need to go to more school, so they are resorting to video games and giving up. I think that schools should go back to being diverse and should teach students all the aspects of learning both creative and intellectual.

My Reaction to A Day Made of Glass

You can check out these videos at A Day Made of Glass
The video A Day Made of Glass by corningincorporated gave me a scare about what our future is coming too. After watching all the videos about glass, the future, schools, and Mr. Wrinkle Wakes I have learned about how fast technology advances in society. I believe that these advances are good and bad in different ways. I think that technology can be good in ways that help us save lives and find cure for cancer, but it takes away from the knowledge in our brain and how much we have learned in schools. It is becoming to the point that machines are running our lives and we are not even creating our own thoughts. It is hurting our communication skills in order to interact with others and have a face to face conversation.

These technology advances are preventing children around the world from going outside and playing. I believe that it is taking away from the creative mind that children have because schools are being forced to focus on the intellectual part rather than the creative part. I think schools should prepare the students for the rapid changes in society because in schools everything is not advancing like it is in the real world and everything is still being done manually. I think that technology is advancing too fast for humans to keep up with and eventually will take over the world and we will no longer have to do anything manual like it was showed in the A Day Made of Glass video. Overall, I am scared for our society and the rate that technology is advancing because it is becoming too much and people are starting not be involved with the outside world.
